In our 34th edition of our favorite weekly post spotlighting another great locally runner. This weeks spotlight runner is Beth Frye and I am thrilled to share her great story. The aim of having a Featured Runner of the Week is not to necessarily single out any individuals, but we want to feature runners who through their uniqueness may one day inspire you to run or reach for new running highs. Every runner has broken down their own barriers, whether it was the big obstacle to take the first running step or entering a race. Each runner will have their own story and to most, these stories to others are very inspiring. Beth Frye – Grounded Running Spotlight Runner of the Week is a great way to kick off our weekend!
Grab a cup of coffee and get to know Beth a little better this morning!
Age: 54
Where are you originally from? Wisconsin
What is your favorite distance to race? Why?
That’s a tough one; each distance has its own special
challenges and rewards. I’ll say the
half marathon. It’s long enough to be a
challenge, it definitely requires training but I do believe it’s something that
everyone can accomplish.
What originally got you into running?
About 15 years ago, we bought a treadmill and my husband
came up with a contest. It was a race to
see which one of us could run two 10 minute miles in a row first. Sadly, I did not win that. Happily, that got me hooked on running. I’ve gone on to run every distance up to and
including the marathon. I’m ready to
redo that contest any time my husband would like to;)
What is your main motivation to keep going?
The older I get, the more I feel it’s important to keep
running as a part of my overall health routine.
At times I might be very old when I’m done with a run, but in general I
honestly believe it keeps me feeling younger and stronger.
When you’re not running, what do you do?
I love to be outside, biking, kayaking, gardening, and
reading, whatever I’m doing I’d rather do it outside.
What is your next race?
Savannah Rock n Roll half marathon in November
Describe your perfect run:
Since it’s August in Beaufort I’ll say that my perfect run
is a run in cool temps! Cool, flat, sunny – I love it!
What piece of advice do you have for someone who is just starting out?
The advice is you honestly can do it! I’ve had so many people say “you run, I could
never run.” Yes, you can! It’s not necessarily going to be fun, it’s
going to be hard work, probably a little painful, but I promise, you can run!
What has been the single greatest thing you have gotten back from running?
Community. The running
community is exceptional! Looking for
quality, welcoming, genuine people? Look
no further than the running community!
I’ve made some of my best friends ever and had the most memorable
experiences all because of running.
Goals for this year?
I’m not sure this will qualify as a goal, but I’m CONSIDERING an ultra event. JUST CONSIDERING.
Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us this week Beth, we wish you the best of luck achieving all your upcoming goals!
