Stephanie Greene – Featured Runner of the Week

Stephanie Greene – Featured Runner of the Week

In our 31st edition of our favorite weekly post, we decided to kick off April with another great local runner, Stephanie Greene and I am thrilled to spotlight this amazing Beaufort native week. The aim of having a Featured Runner of the Week is not to necessarily single out any individuals, but we want to feature runners who through their uniqueness may one day inspire you to run or reach for new running highs. Every runner has broken down their own barriers, whether it was the big obstacle to take the first running step or entering a race. Each runner will have their own story and to most these stories to others are very inspiring. Stephanie Greene – Featured Runner of the Week is a great way to kick off our weekend!

Name: Stephanie Greene Age: 33

Where are you originally from? Beaufort, SC

What is your favorite distance to race? Why? Right now it is half marathon, I want to push myself more and more and step out of my comfort zone. I am always trying to beat my last time in a race, and I feel with a half marathon…it is a race between you and yourself; you have to overcome the physical as well as then mental. You have to get over the point of aches and pain and keep pushing. I will probably never win or place in a half marathon but when you cross that finish line it is a feeling of empowerment and emotions – like “heck yeah wow I just did that!”

What originally got you into running? A friend of mine was wanting to lose weight and get into shape. I told her I would do whatever it takes to help with that- so one day she said “I just signed us for a 5k.” Never being a runner before I was scared and nervous- what if I couldn’t make it , what if I am the last one to cross the finish line, what if I fall?? All this was going through my head up until the whistle blew and we started “woggling”( we called it that because we ran, walked, and jogged during that race). Once we started moving I started to find my “stride” and my competitiveness kicked in and we pushed each other to the finish line- after that I knew I was going to be addicted and push myself more and more each race- I got over the fear

What is your main motivation to keep going? Philippians 4:13 “ I can do all things through Christ Stephanie Greene - Featured Runner of the Weekwho gives me strength” During my first half marathon I was having a difficult time , I was ready to give up, but then a runner passed me with this on the back of his shirt and I thought to myself yes yes yes I can , I will , and so I DID– so I gave it my all, pushed through the pain and finished. Now I know that I can do anything !

When you’re not running, what do you do? When I am not running, I am driving haha I travel a lot for work, so I am always on the road (one way or another), but in my free time I enjoy spending time with family and friends –just relaxing, OHHH and when I can I love getting pedicures haha, I feel my little feet need some love and attention after the beating they endure during the week.

What is your next race? The Crab Crawl, Water Festival 5k & 10K and we just signed up for the inflatable 5k as well.

Describe your perfect run: early in the mornings before people start waking up and the streets come to life, when the air is crisp and stars are still out and it is peaceful– it is the relaxing part of my day.

What piece of advice do you have for someone who is just starting out? Don’t be scared. Maybe a handful were born runners, but for the rest of us found a sport that became a passion. We all had “our first race” it is stepping up the start line and letting the nerves calm down and praying we weren’t the last one or hoping a mom pushing a 3 kid stroller and a dog wouldn’t pass you haha. We have all been there! But realizing just opening the front door and getting out to do something is better than nothing, and making a better you than the you of yesterday. I always think it is best to find a running partner, someone who will hold you accountable and pushes you. Someone who runs your pace and distance.

What has been the single greatest thing you have gotten back from running? My energy and competitiveness, I have always been an energetic person, but running just puts me in a good mood. You feel accomplished and determined. If I don’t run, I feel tired and drained, and get irritated very quickly Goals for this year? Is to run a full marathon, and some more half’s. I am hoping to run Savannah Rock n Roll full this year in November with my running buddies.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story this week Stephanie. We wish you the best this year in meeting all of your training and racing goals! #staygrounded #runbeaufort #runwithpassionGrounded Running Beaufort
