Lindsay & Steven Kern – Featured Runners of the Week

Lindsay & Steven Kern – Featured Runners of the Week

This week is our 21tst edition of our favorite weekly post. Lindsay & Steven Kern – Featured Runner of the Week is another amazing spotlight and we are honored to feature them here. The aim of having a Featured Runner of the Week is not to necessarily single out any individuals, but we want to feature runners who through their uniqueness may one day inspire you to run or reach for new running highs. Every runner has broken down their own barriers, whether it was the big obstacle to take the first running step or entering a race. Each runner will have their own story and to most these stories to others are very inspiring.

We welcome your feedback and nominations of runners who you feel deserve to be featured here. Our Featured Runner of the Week is selected at random on a bi-weekly basis. Every runner deserves to be mentioned and we will do our best to select a wide field of runners to bring their stories for you to enjoy.

We are sad to say good-bye to the Kern family as they leave Beaufort this week, but we are thankful for the time we had with them while they were here. Both were very active in the local Beaufort running scene and they will be missed greatly. Let’s take a few minutes and get to know both Lindsay and Steven as our first couple’s spotlight.

Lindsay & Steven Kern – Featured Runners of the Week – Grounded Running

Name: Lindsay & Steven Kern Lindsay & Steven Kern - Featured Runners of the Week - Grounded Running

Age: Lindsay – 29, Steven – 28

Where are you originally from? Lindsay – Slate Hill, New York, Steven – Ellenville, New York

What is your favorite distance to race and why? Lindsay – I really enjoy running 5k’s. You can find every level of runner at this distance, the crowd is always encouraging and the atmosphere is always fun. Steven – I would have to say half marathon. It is a good enough distance that it is not too short, and not quite that long.

What originally got you into running? Lindsay – 50Lindsay & Steven Kern - Featured Runners of the Week - Grounded Running additional pounds. I enjoyed my first pregnancy a little too much and gained 50lbs. Once M was born I bought a jogging stroller and hit the pavement. Its been an amazing running journey thus far and I’m excited to see where else it takes me. Steven – The military.

What is your main motivation to keep going? Lindsay – My main motivation to keep going are my girls. I know they’re always watching and I need to set the example. Oh and food, I love to eat! Steven – I love doughnuts, and if I did not run I would be on My 600 lb Life in a few weeks.

When you are not running what do you do? LindsayLindsay & Steven Kern - Featured Runners of the Week - Grounded RunningI am a mom of 2 beautiful little girls, Maliya and Emi. We like to go on adventures and have play dates. I also got into triathlon’s last year and they have been a big part of my life both mentally and physically! Steven – I spend time with my wife and our two daughters. The four of us drive over to Grounded running and annoy Tim, Caitlin, and Kevin.

What is your next race? Lindsay – I do not have a race in mind yet since we are moving to Hawaii. Once I get settled I plan to train for upcoming triathlons as well as some local 5k’s. Steven – There is no race in my future as of right now. After my family and I finish our move to Hawaii I will begin looking for races out there.

Describe your perfect run? Lindsay – On a sunny Lindsay & Steven Kern - Featured Runners of the Week - Grounded Running80 degree day through a quaint little town where you can really immerse yourself in your surroundings. Steven – A perfect run is outside regardless of weather. There is never a run that does not have perfection in some way unless it is on a treadmill.

What piece of advice do you have for someone who is just starting out? Lindsay – As wise man once told me, “everyone needs to start somewhere.” When I first started running with Stroller Warriors here in Beaufort I could not run 30 seconds straight during my Coach to 5k program. With motivation from others and persistence ILindsay & Steven Kern - Featured Runners of the Week - Grounded Running eventually ran a half marathon without stopping once. So my advice to you is; keep going and when you feel like you are about to be done and can’t go any further take one more step. Your body will surprise you and you are a lot stronger than you think. Steven – Running is nothing more than an argument with the voice in your head telling you to stop.  Be stubborn and never quit.

What has been the single greatest thing you have gotten back from running? Lindsay – Sanity. No matter what you think, no run is ever a bad run. You always come back with a clearer and well balanced mind. Steven – Sanity. Each run is an escape from the daily grind. The pure echo of footsteps hitting the pavement or dirt creating a rhythmic pulse.

Goals for this year? Lindsay – After having my second Lindsay & Steven Kern - Featured Runners of the Week - Grounded Runninglittle girl, I have been a little bit slower getting back into shape. My goal for this rest of this year would to be get back into it and really find my love for running again. Steven – I want to run a 50 miler within a year from November.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story this week guys! Enjoy your new home and make sure that you stay in touch. We all miss you guys already! #staygrounded #runbeaufort #runwithpassionGrounded Running Beaufort
