Jerry Navarro – Featured Runner of the Week

Jerry Navarro – Featured Runner of the Week

In our 28th edition of our favorite weekly post, we decided to close February out with a great local runner Jerry Navarro and I am thrilled to spotlight him this week. The aim of having a Featured Runner of the Week is not to necessarily single out any individuals, but we want to feature runners who through their uniqueness may one day inspire you to run or reach for new running highs. Every runner has broken down their own barriers, whether it was the big obstacle to take the first running step or entering a race. Each runner will have their own story and to most these stories to others are very inspiring. Jerry Navarro – Featured Runner of the Week is a great way to kick off our weekend!

We welcome your feedback and nominations of runners who you feel deserve to be featured here. Our Featured Runner of the Week is selected at random on a weekly basis. Every runner deserves to be mentioned and we will do our best to select a wide field of runners to bring their stories for you to enjoy.

Let’s take a few minutes and get to know Jerry this week!

Name: Jerry Navarro Jerry Navarro – Featured Runner of the Week

Age: 42

Where are you originally from? Texas, but I grew up mainly in Beaufort, from 85-93.  This beautiful place really is home!

What is your favorite distance to race?  Why?  Currently the 50K.  Pushing myself past the marathon distance the first time, was where I really took on the ultra scene.

What originally got you into running?  My Dad!  The biggest inspiration in my life.  He was a huge runner.  I may never catch his fastest 5K, but that’s why he went by “Speedy.”

What is your main motivation to keep going?  The blessing that I have been bestowed to runJerry Navarro – Featured Runner of the Week again.  I ruptured my Achilles in September 2012, and after surgery, rehab, I really worked hard and was inspired by so many to be able to once again run!

When you’re not running, what do you do?  I’m a Company First Sergeant on MCRD Parris Island.  Somewhere between training cycles, I manage to golf, shoot pool, and hang out with an incredible woman; my wife Megan.

What is your next race?  Myrtle Beach Marathon in two weeks.  Megan will run her first half marathon; I will stay with her for most of her race, then finish up my 26.2.

Describe your perfect run?  Being able to lace up for any run.  I love to run, anywhere, everywhere!

What piece of advice do you have for someone who is just running starting out?  Give it a fairJerry Navarro – Featured Runner of the Week shake.  It may seem long, but 12 weeks.  If you don’t like the way you feel, the way you look, and the knowing the fact that that anyone can do it!!!  Once you’re in motion, the body and mind will take on a new change!   It’s indescribable!!  Do not consider it a chore; enjoy it with a smile!

What has been the single greatest thing you have gotten back from running?  Helping other people, and meeting so many incredible and inspirational people!

Goals for this year?  Another 1000 mile year.  Depending on Myrtle Beach, look for a marathon to break my PR, if not qualify for Boston.  If not, train for my first 50 miler.  If not, just keep going forward with the next mile…

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story this week Jerry. We wish you the best this year in meeting all of your training and racing goals! #staygrounded #runbeaufort #runwithpassionGrounded Running Beaufort
