Darryl Poovey – Featured Runner of the Week

Name: Darryl Poovey

Age: 53 years old

Where are you originally from: Hickory, NC Darryl Poovey – Featured Runner of the Week

What is you favorite distance? Being that I’m new to the race scene I do not have a particular favorite at this time; however, having run a 5K, two 10K’s, and a half marathon I have yet to determine a favored distance. Last Weekend I ran a half marathon at Palmetto Bluff which was my first time running more than 12 miles. I was well prepared and the weather was conducive to the run. My goal was to run it in 2:00. I finished at 1:54:47 making me very happy with the results.

What originally got you into running? About 18 months ago I began a wellness program through my job with Cross Fit Coastal Carolina, specifically the Whole Life Challenge. The fifty-six day program encompassed nutrition, hydration, sleep, stretching, relaxation, and, of course, physical activity. At the start of the program I could barely run a half-mile without an asthma attack. By the end of the fifty-six day period I’d shed twenty-seven pounds and ten inches from my body. I felt great! This led me to do the challenge again which has become a lifestyle for me now.

What is your main motivation to keep going? The relaxation and stress relief that comes with a run at the end of the day is a great motivator to continue in the sport. The health benefits are a plus not to mention the camaraderie and support of other runners.

When you’re not running, what do you do? When I’m not running, my wife, Kim, and I relive the Darryl Poovey – Featured Runner of the WeekVictorian era dressed in period attire. We attend living history events throughout the southeast. I also sing with the Beaufort Harbormasters barbershop chorus. I sing bass with a barbershop quartet, Eu4oria.  I also sing with the choir at my church where I’m an Elder.

What is your next race? As for my next race, much depends upon my busy schedule. The wife wants me working in the yard not to mention installing a newly purchased antique claw foot bathtub in her bathroom. The next race is to be determined although the Homestead race is tempting if I can get my buddy to run with me.

What piece of advice do you have for someone just starting out? For those just starting out I would encourage them to seek advice from seasoned runners like those in the Beaufort Track Club. Adequate training and good equipment are also vital to a successful running experience. Start slowly ad build up to your desired distance. Race yourself, not others. Most importantly, have fun!

Goals for the Year: My goals for the year include longer distance runs and possibly a full marathon within the year while staying healthy!

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your story Darryl, you continue to motivate and inspire those around you through your ongoing friendship and support of the local running community! Keep up the great work and we wish you the best of luck this year! #staygrounded #runbeaufort
